Jamaica Plain - Mr. John Steede, of Jamaica Plain, died Tuesday, January 1, 2013 in the Golden Living Nursing Center in Chestnut Hill. He was 76.
John was born in Waltham on October 24, 1936, a son of the late Joseph and Mary Agnes (O'Connor) Steede. He was a graduate of the former St. Mary's High School and earned his bachelor's degree from Northeastern University and his master's in business administration in English from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. During the Korean War he served with the United States Marine Corps.
John was an editor for the Associated Press in Boston for over thirty-five years before retiring in 1998 and was a member of its News Media Guild.
In his early years he worked as a life guard. He also enjoyed sailing and amateur photography. John had a passion for literature, especially Oscar Wilde and Alfred Lord Tennyson. Appropriately, we now use Tennyson's famous quote, "God's finger touched him and he slept".
He leaves his wife, Phyllis (Malnikow) Steede; his daughter, Sabina Steede and her husband, Victor Bradley, of Dorchester; his granddaughter, Hazel Rose Bradley; his siblings, Donald Steede and his longtime companion, Maureen Loynd, of Smyrna Beach, Florida and Arlene Kennian and her husband, Richard, of Walpole; and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
John was predeceased by his sister, Carolyn Considine.
Family and friends will honor and remember John's life by gathering on Tuesday, January 8th in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham where his Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be private.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 10 Speen Street, Framingham, 01701 or to the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation, 72 River Park Street, St. 202, Needham, MA 02492.
