Waltham Mr. Joseph F. Campbell of Waltham died Monday, February 9, 2004 at Maristhill Nursing Home in Waltham. He was 81. Born in Watertown, a son of the late James P. and Helen M. (Murphy) Campbell, he lived in Waltham for the past 40 years. He graduated from Traippe Academy in Kittery, Maine and during World War II he served with the U.S. Navy. He was a member of a Navy Underwater Demolition Team, the forerunner of todays SEALS, and saw action in the European and Pacific Theatres. He was the recipient of a Purple Heart for wounds received in battle. After the war he became a welder at the Boston Naval Shipyard until his retirement. Mr. Campbell was an active member of Saint Marys Parish in Waltham where he served for many years as an usher, funeral acolyte and Eucharistic minister. He also was a past president and a longtime coach for the North Waltham Little League. The husband of the late Marion L. (Sydell) Campbell, he leaves his children, JoAnne L. Dyer of Shutesbury, Geraldine M. Gerry Campbell of Waltham and Joseph F. Jay Campbell II of Warwick; his foster-son, Kenneth Duarte of Altamonte Springs, FL; one sister, Evelyn Anderson of Seminole, FL; 8 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was also a brother of the late Arthur, Frederick, James and Richard Campbell and Rose Grimes. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral at 10 a.m. Friday from The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham followed by a Funeral Mass in Saint Marys Church, 133 School Street, Waltham at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Saint Patricks Cemetery, Watertown. Visiting hours are Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of ones choice.
