Mr. Joseph C. Cady, of Waltham, died Tuesday, March 17, 2009 at his home. He was 86.
Joe was born in Boston on September 12, 1922, a son of the late Walter M., Sr. and Beatrice (Bosse) Cady and had lived in Dorchester before moving to Waltham in 1993. Until his retirement he worked as a custodian for the Boston Public School system.
He joined the U.S. Army in November of 1940 and during World War II served with the 101st Field Artillery Battalion. Joe was sent to Europe entering through southern France and participated in the Rhineland campaign and the Ardennes Campaign, better known as the 'Battle of the Bulge'. He was awarded two Purple Hearts for wounds received in action in Germany in the winter of 1944-45 and left the army a year later. He was also awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon with three Bronze Stars and the World War II Victory Medal.
Joe leaves his wife, Agnes B. (Lopes) Cady; two daughters, Bernadette Cady-Byczek of Brockton and Claire M. Kennedy of Newton; his grandchildren, Debbie Rousseau Albanna of Waltham, Thomas Rousseau of Marlborough, Chris and Stacy Rousseau of Randolph, John and Tifany Kennedy of Maynard and Shayna Kennedy of Newton; his sister-in-law, Ann Cady of Rockland; 7 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was also a brother of the late Nancy Sorrenti, Marie Barksdale and W. Michael Cady.
Family and friends will honor and remember Joe's life by gathering for calling hours at The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Friday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Jude Church, 147 Main Street, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will be at 2:15 p.m. in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
