Waltham – Retired Waltham Firefighter Joseph R. Conzo died Sunday, December 6, 2015 in Epoch Senior Healthcare Center in Weston. He was 83.
Joe was born in Newton on September 17, 1932, a son of the late Emilio Conzo, Sr. and Doris (Bothwick) Conzo, and moved to Waltham shortly after his marriage to Waltham native Carol A. DeWolfe in September, 1956.
In January, 1959 Joe joined the Waltham Fire Department where he enjoyed a thirty year career. He worked for years as the 'Car 2' driver for the deputy out of the Moody Street station.
He belonged to Local 866 of the International Association of Fire Fighters and was often the local representative for the annual Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon.
During the Korean War he served with the United States Army National Guard and worked part-time as a custodian at Charlesbank Estates in Waltham, a position that he took full time when he retired from the fire department.
Joe's wife of fifty-five years, Carol, died in April, 2011.
He leaves his children, Steven R. Conzo and his wife, Dorothy, Gary J. Conzo, Sharan L. Hawkes and her husband, John, all of Waltham and Alan J. Conzo and his wife, Susan, of Framingham; his grandchildren, Wendy J. Santana and her husband, Paul, Adam J. Conzo and his wife, Maureen, LeeAnn P. Conzo, Alice R. Hawkes, Brodie A. Hawkes, and Caroline M. Hawkes; his great grandson, Connor Conzo and several nieces and nephews.
Joe was a brother of the late Emilio "Leo" Conzo Jr., Pasquale "Pat" Conzo, and Elizabeth Malkofski.
Family and friends will honor and remember Joe's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Thursday, December 10th, from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 9:30 a.m. on Friday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Jude Church, 147 Main Street, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Grove Hill Cemetery, Waltham.
