Waltham – Mr. Joseph F. 'Chick' Fournier, of Waltham, died Monday, October 3, 2011 at his home. He was 75.
Joe was born in Brighton on March 28, 1936, a son of the late Armand J. and Lucille (Henderson) Fournier. He was raised in Watertown and graduated from Newton Vocational High School in 1954. That same year he graduated from the Recruit Depot at Parris Island, South Carolina and spent the next eight years serving with the United States Marine Corps Reserve. A year earlier Joe began a five year courtship with Virginia M. Bowman of Waltham. The couple married on May 10, 1958 and after living in Natick for a short time they settled in Waltham in 1961.
In 1955 he began a more than fifty year career with Local No. 4 of the International Union of Operating Engineers and went to work as a heavy equipment operator. He was also the co-owner of Do-It-Rites Construction in Waltham and later became a field engineer for the Northeast region for the Nordson Corporation.
Joe leaves his wife of 53 years, Virginia M. (Bowman) Fournier and his children, Barbara A. Bourque and her husband, Peter, and Joseph F. Fournier, Jr. and his wife, Wendy, all of Waltham. He was the proud 'Papa' of Meghan E. 'Pill' Bourque, Michael P. 'Louie' Bourque, Amanda M. 'Moo' Fournier and Joseph N. 'Spike' Fournier. Joe was also a brother of Jeanne Johnson of Scarborough, Maine, John Fournier of Lexington and the late Donald Fournier and Ann Cullen and leaves many nieces, nephews and Ralph, the family cat.
Family and friends will honor and remember Joe's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Thursday, October 6th, from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 9:30 a.m. on Friday morning before leaving in procession to Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 880 Trapelo Road, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham.
