Needham – Former Waltham City Councilor Joseph D. Goode died Monday, May 8, 2017 at Avita of Needham. He was 91.
Joe was born in Waltham on April 3, 1926, a son of the late Dermott J. and Catherine (Gallivan) Goode. After graduating from Saint Mary's High School in Waltham in 1943 he joined the United States Navy during World War II where he served until being discharged in July, 1946.
Like so many of his generation Joe went to college on the newly created GI Bill and graduated from Boston College. During the Korean War he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the United States Army but was never called to active duty.
On November 7, 1953 the best part of his life began when he married Waltham's Trudy Andrews in Saint Jude Church. The couple made Waltham their lifelong home before retiring to Falmouth and a final move to Needham.
For most of his career Joe worked as sales manager for U.S. Electric Motors and held the same position with Boston Gear Company, a manufacturer of industrial products.
Joe's affable nature and friendly disposition made him a natural to enter the world of politics. He loved helping people and doing what he thought was best for his neighborhood and his community. Those characteristics are what gave him the longevity to be elected to the city council over a thirty year career.
In addition to his city council duties he was long active with the Warrendale Little League where he served as president for a number of years, started the 'farm league' and helped to build 'the shack'. Joe was a natural at teaching and coaching the game that he loved.
He belonged to Saint Jude Parish where he was a member of the Holy Name Society as well as a past-president. Joe was also counted on every Christmas to show up as Santa Claus at the Warrendale School, a role he thoroughly enjoyed as much or more as the kids who were thrilled to see him.
In addition to his wife of sixty-three years, Trudy, he leaves his children, Joseph R. Goode of Waltham, Timothy G. Goode and his wife, Kathleen, of Weston, Christopher J. Goode of Alexandria, Virginia and Amy J. Simeone and her husband, John, of Needham; his grandchildren, Timothy, Jr. and Jacqueline Goode and Christopher, Sarah and Charlie Simeone; his sister, Marie Maguire of Shrewsbury and many nieces and nephews.
Joe was also the brother of the late Andrew Goode.
Family and friends will honor and remember Joe's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Monday, May 15th from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral services and burial in Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Good Shepherd Community Care, 90 Wells Avenue, Newton, MA 02459.
