Waltham – Mr. Joseph I. Griggs, of Waltham, died Monday, June 5, 2017 at his home. He was 83.
Known affectionately as 'Irv' to family and friends, he was born in Waltham on August 16, 1933, a son of the late Doris Jordan Griggs Meek and Joseph Griggs, and was a lifelong resident.
For years he ran Irv's Window Cleaning, a business now run by his son, Joe. Prior to that, he worked for the Town of Belmont for more than twenty years. Irv always kept busy working two jobs most of his life to support his family. He was a talented carpenter and scrap metal dealer.
For years the family spent many happy summer and winter vacations at their camp in Wentworth, New Hampshire where Irv enjoyed fishing in the good weather and snowmobiling during snow season. Irv was an avid Nascar fan and collected memorabilia for over thirty years. His family will affectionately remember him for always having a lottery ticket in hand.
The husband of the late Shirley M. (Lirette) Griggs, he leaves his children, Shirley A. Coppi and her husband, Thomas, of Leominster, Carol Krampits and her husband, Fred, of California, Robert Griggs of Millis, Doris M. Diesi and her husband, Michael, of Hudson, Jeanne Porter and her husband, Steve, of Waltham, Patricia Bourque and her husband, Roger, of Lynn, Joseph W. Griggs and his wife, Arlene, of Waltham and Elizabeth Lirette of Leominster; his brothers and sister, Ralph and Robert Griggs, both of New Hampshire and Doris Carmel of Waltham; nineteen grandchildren, twenty-five great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson and many nieces and nephews.
Irv was also a brother of the late Richard "Dick" Jordan, Walter Griggs and Lawrence "Tiny" Griggs.
Family and friends will honor and remember Irv's life by gathering for a graveside service at 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 8th in Mount Feake Cemetery, 203 Prospect Street, Waltham.
