Waltham – Mr. Joseph F. McGann, of Waltham, died Monday, April 21, 2008 in his home surrounded by his family. He was 94. Born in Waltham on May 5, 1913, a son of the late Peter F. and Margaret R. (Hanlon) McGann, Joe was a lifelong resident. Until his retirement he was the Director of Veterans Services for the City of Waltham. He was also the clerk for the Waltham License Commission for thirty years. Joe was a 1931 graduate of Waltham High School. He joined the U.S. Army in March, 1941 and his unit, the Americal Division, was the first expeditionary unit deployed to the Pacific following the attack at Pearl Harbor in December of the same year. He served as a staff sergeant. The husband of the late Mary J. (Carney) McGann, Joe was the devoted father of Kathleen M. McGann of Waltham, Maureen J. Murray and her husband, Richard, of Framingham, Joseph F. 'Jay' McGann, Jr. of Westboro, Margaret H. Shropshire and Robert C. McGann both of Waltham, and Patricia F. McGann of Weston and cherished grandfather of Luke and Julie Lomartire, Justin, Kara and Brianne McGann, Jared and Jenna Mae Bourgeois and Brenton Murray. He also leaves many nieces and nephews. Joe was also a brother of the late Irene, M. Gertrude, Helen, Paul, and Leo McGann. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral at 9 a.m. Thursday from The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham followed by a Funeral Mass in Saint Mary's Church, 133 School Street, Waltham at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham.
