Newtonville – Mr. Joseph R. McNamara, of Newtonville, died Thursday, October 22, 2015 at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. He was 82.
Joe was born in Cambridge on July 8, 1933, a son of the late Matthew and Eleanor (Dineen) McNamara. He was a graduate of the Cambridge Latin School and later earned his degree from Bentley College in Waltham.
During the Korean War he served with the United States Army. After his discharge from the service he worked for thirty years as a revenue agent for the Internal Revenue Service.
An avid sports fan and a true Irishman, he loved Notre Dame Football and the New England Patriots. He would also watch every Atlanta Braves baseball game, mainly because he had done so ever since they were the Boston Braves. Ballroom dancing was also something Joe loved to do . . . a weekly trip to Moseley's on the Charles was always a favorite destination.
Joe leaves his children, Stephen J. McNamara and his wife Sophia of Alameda, California, Susan M. McNamara of Newton and Linda J. Davis and her husband George of Santa Monica, California; his grandchildren, Noel, Julian, Vika, and David; his beloved Esther McGinness of Waltham and many nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Matthew McNamara, June McNamara and Helen McLaughlin.
Family and friends will honor and remember Joe's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Monday, October 26th from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 8 a.m. on Tuesday morning before leaving in procession to Our Lady Help of Christians Church, 573 Washington Street, Newton where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham.
