Waltham – Mr. Joseph F. Merola, Jr., of Waltham, died Tuesday, September 3, 2013 at his home. He was 70.
Joe was born in Waltham on October 19, 1942, a son of the late Joseph F. and Emma M. Varvaro Merola, both longtime physicians in the city. He was a lifelong Waltham resident and a member of Saint Mary's High School Class of 1960.
A mathematics whiz, Joe earned a degree in the subject at Holy Cross College in Worcester and taught math for a short time in Ayer. After that he joined the United States Army and served during the Vietnam War.
After his discharge Joe worked as a software engineer for many years at Digital Equipment Company in Maynard. He was also a talented musician and played piano in the company's big band. After retiring he kept busy during tax season working locally for H&R Block.
He leaves his siblings, Marianne V. Merola and Henry J. Merola, M.D. and his wife, Rosemary, all of Waltham and his nieces and nephews, Jonathan and his wife, Estelle, David, Henry, Jr. and Faith Merola and Catherine, Anthony and Margaret Campagna.
He was also a brother of the late Frank R. Merola and Anthony F. Merola.
Family and friends will honor and remember Joe's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Friday, September 6th from 6 to 8 p.m. and again at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Mary's Church, 133 School Street, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham.
