Joseph M. Onorato

Waltham - Mr. Joseph M. Onorato, of Waltham, died Friday, September 14, 2012 in the Epoch Nursing Home in Weston after a short illness. He was 95. Mr. Onorato was born in Springfield on November 8, 1916, a son of the late Joseph Massimo and Elena (Lupi) Onorato. He was a graduate of Classical High School in Springfield.

Joseph grew up in Springfield with his sisters, the late Naomi Hurd and Elvira Robinson. He often reminisced about working in his father's dry goods store in Springfield and on the family's farm in Sommers, Connecticut and camping and fishing at Moosehead Lake in Maine. As a young man he attended Northeastern University nights while working for Gulf Oil Corporation. In 1942 he enlisted in the United States Army and served as a captain with an ordnance unit in Europe, participating in the Normandy and Rhineland campaigns.

He spent most of his career with Ludlow Corporation working in various capacities, including three years managing their plant in Jamaica, West Indies. He lived in Needham and in Westwood before moving to Waltham three years ago.

Joseph enjoyed gardening, reading, music and good food. He will be remembered for his humorous and philosophical approach to life, his kindness and integrity, and his unflagging devotion to his family, especially his beloved wife Lucille.

He is survived by his wife, W. Lucille (Welch) Onorato; his children, Joseph M. Onorato and his wife, Paulette, of Sudbury, William E. Onorato of Medfield, Michael F. Onorato and his wife, Jean, of Acton, Mary L. Onorato and Patricia A. Onorato both of Waltham; five grandchildren, Katherine Onorato Stokes of Washington, D.C., Joseph Onorato of San Francisco, Robert Onorato also of San Francisco, Christina Onorato of Pittsburg and Bisanne Masoud of Los Angeles; and two great grandchildren, Emi Onorato and Minna June Onorato Stokes.

Family and friends will honor and remember Joseph's life by gathering on Thursday, September 20th in Saint Mary's Church, 133 School Street, Waltham, where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will be private.
