Stow - Dr. Joseph E. Qualitz, of Stow, died Friday, May 3, 2013 at home. He was 65.
Born in Waltham on April 1, 1948 he was the son of the late Joseph and Helen (Fitzgerald) Qualitz. He was a graduate of Waltham High School, class of 1966.
Joe earned his Bachelor, Masters and PhD degrees all from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge. He married Donna M. Penzone on September 3, 1971 and they moved to Stow over 38 years ago.
Joe worked for Artisan Industries in Waltham for many years before establishing his own companies, Fluorometrix in 1993 and Biodox in 2012 and was still working at the time of his death.
Joe was an extremely hard-working man who instilled these values and same work ethic in his sons. He was brilliant but modest and humble about his accomplishments and passions. Long before a calculator had the correct number Joe had the answer on his lips. He was one of the most honest men and was a gentle mannered soul whose world was his family and for whom he provided. He was crafty and able to start and finish projects around the home, a trait admired by his boys. He was a voracious reader but had a passion for Sherlock Holmes. Other interests included Boston sports, playing Tetris on his Kindle, and his lottery tickets. Though his health over the last several years robbed him of many physical abilities it never claimed his mind and his heart. Until his last breath, his mind was still at work and his family was aware of the depth of his love for them. Anyone who knew Joe knew what an amazing man he was. He will be so very missed.
In addition to his wife of 41 years, Donna, he leaves his sons, Adam R. Qualitz of Hudson and Jason R. Qualitz and his fiancé, Sashi Gupta, of Stow, his sisters, Joan Butler of Watertown and Janet Qualitz of Waltham; his mother-in-law Edith Penzone and the late Anthony Penzone of Lancaster, his brother-in-law Anthony Penzone and his wife Dawn of Hudson and his sister-in-law Karen Riccio and her husband Philip of Lancaster; also nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will gather to honor and remember Joe's life privately in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main St., (Rt. 20) Waltham. Burial is private.
