Waltham – Mr. Joseph F. Santolucito, Sr., of Waltham, died Thursday, March 19, 2009 at Fairview Nursing Home in Hudson, New Hampshire. He was 92.
Joe was born in Waltham on August 9, 1916, a son of the late Joseph and Marion (Picone) Santolucito, and had been a lifelong resident. Until his retirement he was a self-employed landscape contractor in Waltham.
During World War II he served with the United States Army. Joe joined the service in March of 1942 and left for England a year later. He spent just under three years overseas and participated in the liberation of Europe that included the Normandy invasion, campaigns in northern France, including the 'Battle of the Bulge' during the winter of 1944-45, the Rhineland and central Germany. He was awarded the European-African- Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon with five service stars.
After the war, Joe returned home to Waltham and in 1946 married the former Pauline T. Mobilia of Waltham. They were married for fifty-five years until Pauline's death in 2001. Joe was a member of the Joseph F. Hill American Legion Post No. 156 in Waltham and the Filicudi Associates.
He leaves his children, Marion T. Mahoney and her husband, Robert, of Hudson, New Hampshire and Paula M. Croteau and her husband, Robert, of Billerica; his grandchildren, Michelle M. Snow and her husband, Bill, of Barrington, Rhode Island and Jennifer M. Bass and her husband, Mark, of Charlotte, North Carolina; his great-grandchildren, Colby and Trevor Snow; his step great-grandchild, Morghan Bass; one brother, Angelo Santolucito of Waltham; his sister, Elizabeth Woods of Arlington and many nieces and nephews.
Joe was also the father of the late Joseph F. Santolucito, Jr. and brother of the late Lawrence Santolucito, Carmela Santolucito, Caroline Lelli, Angela Giorgetti, Helen Santolucito and Salvatore Santolucito.
Family and friends will honor and remember Joe's life by gathering for calling hours at The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. and again at 10 a.m. on Monday morning before leaving in procession to Sacred Heart Church, 311 River Street, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.
