Mr. Joseph M. Tyler, of Allston, formerly of Waltham, died at home on Saturday, June 15, 2024. He was 94.
He was born on March 15, 1930 in Waltham a son of the late Joseph Richard and Mary Cecilia (Lally) Tyler. Raised in Allston in Saint Anthony’s Parish he was a graduate of English High School in Boston.
Joe had a long career as a brick layer and mason. He joined the BAC Local 15 in Waltham in June of 1947 and rose through the ranks becoming its president and business manager as well as administering its pension fund. He served in various capacities as Delegate of the BAC International Union, Eastern Massachusetts BAC District Council and Massachusetts AFL/CIO. Joe served as trustee for the Eastern MA BAC Apprenticeship Fund and MA BAC Fringe Benefits Fund. He also served as Executive Board Member of the Massachusetts Building Trades Council and field representative for BAC Local 3 Eastern Massachusetts. Joe enjoyed retirement at age 65.
When not heavily involved in his work of which he was passionate, Joe would be most content heading north in his camper to the tunes of various Neil Diamond soundtracks. He would sing along as he made his way to his most favorite ski resort, Mount Snow, where he was a well known figure and friend. It was at Mount Snow where Joe would regularly provide cups of hot chocolate to the parking attendants and cookies to lift attendants. He had a terrific sense of humor and was a jokester. As a union head he always knew the right question to ask. While soft spoken his messages were heard well and with intention. Joe was successful in that he always rallied for the union worker for fair and just wages and benefits. His motto ‘always leave things better than you found them’ proved true throughout his life both professionally and personally.
Joe also loved the read of a good book and countless rounds of golf both locally and at Apple Hill Golf Course in East Kingston, New Hampshire.
Joe was predeceased by his children Joseph ‘Rick’ Tyler (†2005), Stephen Tyler (†2021) and Susan Tyler (†2009); his step-son, David Coppola and his brother, James Tyler.
In addition to his wife, Pauline C. (Nogrady) Tyler, he leaves his son, James Tyler of Phoenix, Arizona; his grandchildren, Dereck, Megan, Corey, Timothy and Anthony Tyler (Sarah); many great-grandchildren including Aidan, Patrick, Kilian and Lyra; his nieces and nephews, Carole-Anne Tyler (Richard), Brenda-Jean Tyler (Raed), Rose-Marie Tyler Robertson, (Mark), Colin Tyler (Kristin), and Scott Cloonan, and sixty-year friends, James O’Brien and Pamela Levy of Franklin; and his step-children, Elaine, Mary-Rose and Joseph 'Chip' Coppola.
Family and friends will honor and remember Joe’s life by gathering to visit on Saturday, July 13th from 10 to 11 a.m. in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street Waltham followed by his Life Celebration at 11 a.m. A reception will follow the service at the Joseph F. Hill American Legion Post No. 156, 215 Waverly Oaks Road, Waltham. Burial is private.
