Waltham – Mrs. Josephine M. (Vellante) Failla, of Waltham, died Monday, June 21, 2010 in her home. She was 100.
Josephine was born in Penne, Italy in the Pescara Province on November 21, 1909, a daughter of the late Antonio and Giacondina (Delle Monache) Vellante. She immigrated to the United States with her family when she was eight years old and settled in Waltham.
Josephine worked at the Waltham Watch Factory where she met her late husband, Vincent Failla, who died in 1984. They were married in 1933. She also worked at the Raytheon Company and had been a member of the Regina Margherita Lodge of the Order of Sons of Italy in Waltham.
Josephine is survived by her children, Dr. Vincent P.A. Failla and his wife, Margaret, of Waltham, Carol L. Doughman and her husband, Dr. Donald Doughman, of Edina, Minnesota, and Gloria J. Failla of Waltham; her grandchildren, Elizabeth Pettine and her husband, David, Andrea Winkler and her husband, Josef, Vincent P.A. Failla, Jr., Kristin Failla, and David Doughman and his wife, Nicole; her great-grandchildren, Justin and Payton Pettine; her sister, Frances Monaco of Chelmsford and many nieces and nephews.
She was also the sister of the late Arthur Vellante, Alice Taranto, and William Vellante.
Family and friends will honor and remember Josephine’s life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning before leaving in procession to Sacred Heart Church, 311 River Street, Waltham, where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham.
