Hudson – Ms. Josephine A. ‘Jo’ Mula, of Hudson, died Friday, December 10, 2010 at Saint Patrick’s Manor in Framingham. She was 79.
Jo was born in Waltham on June 13, 1931, the eighth of nine children born to the late Vincenzo and Rose (Falzone) Mula. She was raised in Waltham, graduating from Waltham High School in 1949. Jo earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Sargent College at Boston University in 1954 and began her career as a teacher in Maryland. She moved home in 1956 and began working in the Wayland school system as a physical education teacher for the junior and senior high schools.
After taking courses in guidance and counseling for four years at Boston University she became a guidance counselor at Wayland Junior High School. Several years later she was appointed assistant principal at the school, a position she held until her retirement in 1976.
After retirement she lived for a time in Dennis before moving to Hudson in 1989. Jo was long active with the Sargent College Alumni Association, never missing a reunion with her class. She also belonged to the Massachusetts Teachers Association. In retirement she kept busy by substitute teaching at the Hudson elementary school and by helping at the town polling station at election time. She also travelled across the country and the world with close friends and especially loved trips to Aruba.
Jo leaves her brother, Rosario ‘Rusty’ Mula and his wife, Dorothy, of Waltham; two sisters, Susan Mula of Natick and Mary Toohey of Hudson; her sister-in-law, Dorothy Mula of Waltham and many nieces and nephews.
She was also a sister of the late Carmelo ‘Chuck’ Mula, Katherine McCue, Anne Marcolina, Sally Bonica and Carmela E. ‘Nellie’ Renna.
Family and friends will honor and remember Jo’s life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte.20), Waltham on Wednesday, December 15th, from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Thursday morning before leaving in procession to Sacred Heart Church, 311 River Street, Waltham where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham.
