Joyce Engler

Joyce (Sullivan) Engler, of Waltham, formerly of Watertown and Sudbury, died at Newton Wellesley Hospital on Saturday, February 18, 2023. She was 72.

Born in Cambridge, she was the daughter of William Sullivan and Florence Martin. Joyce was raised in Lexington and graduated from Lexington high school.

Joyce and her former husband, Mark, moved to North Carolina. She graduated from University of North Carolina Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English and Dramatic Arts. They later moved back to Massachusetts. While raising their children Joyce also worked as a teacher, substituting in the Concord and Lincoln schools systems. She had been a Waltham resident since 2018 and lived in Watertown for the decade prior to that.

Joyce had a sharp wit and a great sense of humor. She was childlike in her warmth. She loved the ocean and swimming, enjoyed theater, and was also a published poet.

She leaves her daughters, Dana, Clare, and Abigail and her sisters Lois Masters and Diane Gordon. She was predeceased by her sister the late Nancy Hanson.

Funeral services for Joyce will be held privately.
