Juan J. Palmerola

Waltham – Mr. Juan J. Palmerola, of Waltham, died Tuesday, October 16, 2012 in Meadow Green Nursing Home in Waltham. He was 81.

Juan was born in Havana, Cuba on November 13, 1930, a son of the late Joaquin and Dolores (Cabrera) Palmerola. He was raised and educated in Cuba and was a graduate of the University Nacional José Martí in Havana.

Juan worked as an attorney before fleeing his native country during the Cuban Revolution that began in 1953. He moved to Miami and later to Puerto Rico before moving to Belmont and eventually settling in Waltham in 1991. On June 23, 1962 he married Miriam E. Echeveste in Saint Peter's Church in Cambridge.

His professional career in the States began as a Spanish teacher in Scituate and later at Wayland High School. Juan also worked as a probation officer in Dorchester and later at Framingham District Court before retiring.

Proud of his Cuban heritage he was a member of Centro Cultural Cubano and the Spanish Cultural Institute. He was an avid photographer, enjoyed gardening and travel.

In addition to his wife of 50 years, Miriam, he leaves his daughter, Maria L. Matayabas and her husband, David, of Waltham; his grandson, Javier Matayabas; his in-laws, Betty Palmerola and Carolina Palmerola, both of Miami, Lourdes Alvarez of Belmont, Santiago Echeveste of Chicago and Alberto Echeveste of Mexico City and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Juan was predeceased by his brothers, Dr. Joaquin Palmerola M.D. and Dr. Jorge Palmerola D.M.D.

Family and friends will honor and remember Juan's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Sunday, October 21st from 2 to 5 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Monday morning before leaving in procession to Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 880 Trapelo Road, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.

Memorials in his name may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Eastern MA, 480 Pleasant Street, Watertown, MA 02472.
