Miss Julia M. Tomao of Waltham, died Tuesday, April 15, 2015, in her home. Miss Tomao was born in Waltham on April 11, 1926, a daughter of the late Julian and Mary (Piacentino) Tomao.
Miss Tomao was raised and educated in Waltham, graduating from Waltham High School, Class of 1944. She went to work for Grover Cronin's department store as an office manager. After that Julia worked as an operator for the New England Telephone Company.
After passing the civil service exam, Julia went to work as a secretary at Waltham City Hall and then transferred to the Waltham Police Department where she stayed for twenty two years until her retirement in 1993.
Julia was a member of the Boston Professional Women's Association as well as the Retired State, County, and Municipal Employees Association. She also volunteered at Waltham Hospital and was a member of Saint Mary's Church Choir for eighteen years.
Julia is survived by her sister, Eleanor Pambookian of West Newton and four nieces, one nephew, three grandnieces, and four grandnephews.
She was also the sister of the late Alice Parkey.
Family and friends will honor and remember Julia's life by gathering for calling hours on Friday, April 18th, from 4-7 pm in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street, (Rte. 20), Waltham and again at 9 am on Saturday before leaving in procession to Saint Bernard's Church, 1523 Washington Street, West Newton, where a Liturgical Blessing will be celebrated at 10 am. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham.
