Weston – Mrs. Katherine (Reardon) McHugh, of Weston, formerly of Williamsburg, Virginia, died Sunday September 15th at the Sunrise of Weston, where she had lived for the last eight years. She was 96. She was the wife of the late James F. McHugh, Jr.
Katherine was born on March 23, 1917, a daughter of the late B. Scott and Abigail (Duggan) Reardon. She was a full-time mother until the mid-sixties when she went to the University of Rhode Island to obtain her teaching degree. She then taught in the Rhode Island public school system and opened a small business as reading tutor in Wakefield, RI. Katherine and her family moved to Newport News, Virginia where she taught for another nine years. Upon retiring in Williamsburg, Virginia, she became a docent and a member of the Board of Trustees at the Muscarelle Museum of Art on the campus of the College of William and Mary. She was a very active member of St. Bede Church where she sang in the choir and was involved in fund raising for the new church building. She also was very involved with the Williamsburg Garden Club..
She leaves her children, James F. McHugh, III, and his wife, Katherine, of Charlestown, Massachusetts, Abigail A. Charlet and her husband, Andre, of Lyons, France, Timothy R. McHugh of Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts and Thomas M. McHugh and his wife, Brook, of Alexandria, Virginia. She displayed great pride in and love for her grandchildren, Jennifer Gemo Mathis, Jerome Gemo, Emily McHugh, Abigail McHugh Jenney, Rebecca McHugh, Thomas McHugh, Jr., Robert McHugh, Laura Lee McHugh, Samantha McHugh and Matthew McHugh and was delighted by the arrival of her great-grandchildren, Juliette, Tom, James and Sophia. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
She was the sister of the late Thomas Reardon, B. Scott Reardon, Jr., Anne Reardon Rev. John I. Reardon, O.P. and Mary Margaret Burke.
Family and friends will honor and remember Katherine's life by gathering to visit in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Saturday, September 21st from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. followed by her Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Julia's Church, 374 Boston Post Road, Weston. Burial in Williamsburg will be private.
