Scituate

Kathleen P. ‘Kay’ (Tobin) Melanson, of Scituate and Pompano Beach, Florida and formerly of Waltham, died peacefully Saturday, April 5, 2025, at her home in Florida. She was 91.

Kathleen was born in Waltham on September 18, 1933, a daughter of the late Lawrence B. & Catherine (Halley) Tobin. Kay attended Saint Charles High School in Waltham where she was active in numerous school activities. She was the Captain of the Cheerleader's for the football team and basketball team. After graduating Kay led a wonderful and fulfilled life encompassing her indelible sense of humor and her intuitive, yet subtle, colorful flair for fashion, design and décor.

On Valentine's Day, 1953 she married her high school sweetheart, George R. Melanson at Saint Charles Borromeo Church and they lived in Waltham before moving to Scituate in 1991. They also spent many happy times at their winter home in Pompano, Florida. Kay worked as a Police Crossing Guard in Waltham for many years. She took pride in her job and earned the respect and affection from the children to whom she ensured their safety as they went to and from school. She took that same zeal and compassion for her charge with her during her employment at McClean Hospital working as an executive assistant to Dr. Holder MD. Kay was active as a Hockey Mom, a Football Mom, a Baseball Mom, a Dance Mom, a Theatre Mom, a Beach Mom, , and "oh yes" as a Mom in which she took great pride. She was also active in her Community. Whether it was working at the "Shack" at the Little Nippers, or participating in a fundraiser for Waltham Youth Sports, or the Reagle Players, or singing in the St. Charles choir, you could always count on Kay being there and leading the way. Local politics was an advocation for Kay, especially when participating in the successful campaigns of family friend Bill Stanley. In addition, she spent weekends, and eventually her long summers, enjoying her time with family and friends at her beautiful home at the scenic (Norman Rockwell like) Minot Beach in Scituate.

Music was always a big part of her life. She and her husband George spent hours and hours listening to music and singing and dancing with friends and family. Oh how they loved to go out with their friends. Whether it be a Broadway show, a Reagle Player's Production, a big band concert or a solo performer Kay & George could be found enjoying their time together. 'Ole Blue Eyes', Frank Sinatra, was one of her favorites. Those that knew her well appreciated her exquisite musical talent as a singer. She also had a special skill in writing poetry. Her remarkable gift for sharing stories was always warmly welcomed by family and her many friends.

Holiday gatherings were special to Kay. No matter the occasion; Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, 4th of July, Labor Day, Kay was a fun and gracious host. She made sure all details were attended to so everybody could enjoy a great time together. One can still hear the music, the pulse of the dance, the laughter at the parades, and the smell and taste of all those delicious food(s).

Kathleen was caring and compassionate with a tremendous faith in God. She would send prayers to the Blessed Mother for those in need on a daily basis. It is in her connection with God, her genuine zest for life, and her beautiful smile accompanied by laughter that she would spread the Love that was in her heart.

She leaves her children, Francis X. Melanson (Brenda) of Marlborough, Maryanne P. Mara (Mike) of Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, George R. Melanson, Jr. (Joan) of Milford and Marlene P. Melanson of Cohasset; her grandchildren, Michael Melanson (Ashley), Nicholas Mara, Lindsay (Melanson) Margiotta (Accursio), Lauren Melanson; Brittany Rourke, Jack Cronin, Robin and Reneé LaPorte; her sisters-in-law, Gloria Goodwin of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Florida, Lorraine LeBlanc (Roger) of Hallendale Beach, Florida, brother-in-laws William Melanson of Waltham and Lawrence Melanson of Lynnfield; her great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Lillian, Benjamin, Charlotte, Camilla, Rayah, Lyla, and Marco, as well as several nieces, nephews and their families.

In addition to her parents and her husband, George, Kay joins her beloved grandson, Jason Connor Mara, her much loved brothers & sisters, Lawrence Tobin, Dorothy Moore, Ruth Kelley and Joan Farrell, in heaven.
