Waltham – Cherished husband, father, and grandfather, Laurie Savoie passed away Wednesday morning, December 27, 2017 at home with his loving and devoted wife and daughter at his side following a long illness.
Laurie was born in Saint-Maurice, New Brunswick, the son of the late Ernest and Marguerite (Cormier) Savoie. He started working on the family farm at a young age and then became a lumberjack to help provide for his family during his teenage years. He would leave home for several months at a time to work in various areas, including Labrador, Canada.
He immigrated to the United States as a young man and worked as a union carpenter with local 218 in Boston. He selflessly worked extremely hard to provide the very best for his family. He was truly a role model for all.
Laurie is survived by his loving wife, Bernice (Maillet) Savoie, originally from Sainte-Marie-de-Kent, New Brunswick. They were completely devoted to each other having been married fifty-four years. During his long illness, there was never a question that Laurie would stay at their home being cared for by his wife, despite the difficult obstacles and sacrifices that she faced. His only daughter, Brenda (Savoie) Cleary was very involved in the care of her father, whom she deeply adored. Living minutes from her parent's home, she assisted in his daily care and was always available. Laurie's son-in-law, Jay Cleary, was also very present in helping with day to day tasks. A close and respectful relationship developed over the years.
He leaves a legacy of two grandsons, Julian Cleary of Eugene, Oregon and Wesley Cleary of Waltham. Following his retirement, he was actively involved in his grandson's lives which brought him great joy and happiness. He loved and treasured them and spent time with them almost daily. His oldest grandson, Julian, was able to come home to spend time with his grandfather this past fall prior to his passing. His family will always cherish the memories of the entire family being together one last time. His youngest grandson, Wesley, was very involved in assisting his grandparents in any way possible and was able to spend a great amount of time with them.
He also leaves his brothers, Gerald Savoie of Moncton, New Brunswick, Abel Savoie of Leominster and Norman Savoie of Fitchburg; his sister, Exelda Goguen of Hartford, Connecticut, Therese Allain of Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and his dear sister-in-law, Annette Maillet of Bouctouche, New Brunswick, who lived with them for many years.
Laurie was also the brother of the late Aquela Savoie, Eva Maillet, Cecelia Arsenault and Edith Gauvin.
He also leaves many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be private.
