Larry Donovan grew up in the Mission Hill Housing Projects of Boston where sons would eventually become union workers, cops or priests, and the Donovan boys fulfilled these traditional and somewhat expected obligations. As a longtime member of the Asbestos Union #6 in Dorchester, Larry was a pipe coverer - a person who works with insulation - in a job that was seldom easy. And while a lot of construction jobs were in the greater Boston area, he would often travel to where the work was in order to provide for his family.
Lawrence T. Donovan, Sr. was born on December 20, 1942 in Boston, a son of the late Edward and Grace (Roth) Donovan. A graduate of Mission High School with the class of 1960, education remained something which Larry deemed important. He raised his three children in Derry, New Hampshire, with his former wife, Donna J. (Mealey) Donovan.
Life brings change to each of us as it did with Larry. He later met Marilyn A. (Foley) Powers and they enjoyed almost seventeen years together. They divided their time between Dedham and Naples, Florida. In Florida he was a familiar and much-loved member of his community. He served on the condo association board for many years and did his best to manage decisions for the community. Larry had a terrific wit with which he would easily humor family, friends and strangers. He loved the warm Florida weather, his daily cribbage games and a Miller Lite while listening to the 'oldies' play in the background.
Larry died peacefully on Tuesday, October 13, 2020 in Beth Israel Hospital in Boston after being stricken ill at home on Sunday. He was 77.
Larry knew the best things in life were not things. His heart was filled with the love of family. In addition to Marilyn, he leaves his children, Lawrence T. Donovan, Jr. of Manhattan, New York, Diane M. Johnson (Jeff) of Gig Harbor, Washington, and Maureen Donovan of Derry, New Hampshire; his sisters, Clare Finnegan (late George) of Dedham and Fay Geary (Bobby) of Hyannis and Naples, Florida; Marilyn's children, James E. Powers of Canton, Jean M. Arki (William Casteel) of Dartmouth, John E. Powers (Laura), Lyn A. Goode (John), all of Dedham, and Stephen T. Powers (Taryn) of South Boston; grandchildren, Abby & Daniel, Courtney & Steven, Alexa & Sydney, Jack & Joseph, Stephen, Isla and Leo; great-grandchildren, Jaydyn and Brooklyn; sisters-in-law, Mary Louise Donovan of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Sheila Donovan of Malden, and several nieces & nephews. Larry was predeceased by his brothers, Edward and Joseph Donovan.
