Waltham – Brother Leo L. Lapointe, S.M., of Waltham, died Saturday, August 3, 2013 in Saint Elizabeth's Hospital, Brighton. He was 83.
Brother Leo was born in Salem on February 26, 1930, a son of the late Alfred and Helen (Pelletier) Lapointe. He was a 1948 graduate of Central Catholic High School in Lawrence and after that worked for H.E. Hersey Construction before entering the Marist Preparatory Seminary in 1949.
Brother Leo was assigned to the Marist Seminary in Bedford where he served as the caretaker of the grounds and livestock. In 1960 he was sent to the Marist Mission in Vanuatu in the South Pacific where a was an engineer on the mission boat, "St. Joseph" for one year, and then the plantation manager for seventeen years. He returned to the United States in 1979 and was in charge of general maintenance at The Marist House in Framingham until 2004. He is remembered by his Marist confrères as being kind, strong, gentle, resourceful and capable of handling any situation that came his way.
In addition to the Marist Community he is survived by his siblings, Rita Gagnon of Lawrence, Sister Theresa Lapointe, SMSM, of Framingham and Philip Lapointe of Lawrence.
He was also a brother of the late Gerard R. Lapointe.
Family and friends will honor and remember Brother Leo's life by gathering to visit at 9 a.m. on Wednesday morning, August 7th, in Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 880 Trapelo Road, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Andover, at 2 p.m.
