Hallandale, Florida - Mr. Leonard J. "Lenny" Scafidi, of Hallandale, formerly of Waltham, died Sunday, September 25, 2016, in Aventura Hospital in Aventura, Florida. He was 79.
Lenny was born in Waltham on March 25, 1937, a son of the late Salvatore and Vincenza (Camuti) Scafidi. He graduated from Waltham High School in 1956 and served as chairman of his high school reunion committee until he moved to Florida. He was a captain for his football team in 1955 and was inducted into the Waltham High School Football Hall of Fame in 1986. He played semi-pro football with the Waltham Saxons and the West Newton Merchants.
From 1956 to 1958 Lenny served with the United States Marine Corps.
For many years he was the assistant baseball coach for Waltham High School with his brother, Al, being the head coach. He also coached in the Babe Ruth League, the Mickey Mantle League, the Connie Mack League, the Stan Musial League, and the Waltham American Legion Baseball Team. He also coached the U.S. High School All Star Baseball Team that toured Europe.
Lenny was the owner of Higgins Printing, West End Beer & Wine and the co-owner of Century Glass Company. He was also a member of the Waltham Sons of Italy and the Waltham Moose.
After he moved to Hallandale he established Sheffield Auction Gallery and Gallery Art Studio and for six years coached for the Hallandale High School baseball team.
He is survived by his children, Mark Scafidi of Ayer, Leonard Scafidi and his wife, Rose, of North Carolina, David Scafidi and Christopher Scafidi both of Florida; his grandchildren, Heather, Bobby and Gabriella; his brothers and sister, Anthony Scafidi of Northborough, Jeannette Scafidi and Bernard Scafidi both of Waltham and many nieces and nephews.
Leonard was also the brother of the late Salvatore, James, Carl, Ernest, Alfred, Richard, Robert, Raymond, Philip, Marie, and Baby Alfred Scafidi, Dominica Marmonti, Concetta Ferro, and Josephine Collura.
Family and friends will honor and remember Lenny's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Thursday, September 29th from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Friday morning before leaving in procession to Sacred Heart Church, 311 River Street, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.
