Lillian M. (McNamara) Condon

May 10, 1926 — November 10, 2016

Waltham – Mrs. Lillian M. (McNamara) Condon, of Waltham, died Thursday, November 10, 2016 in Meadow Green Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Waltham. She was 90.

Lillian was born and raised in Charlestown, a daughter of the late William H. and Margaret E. (Lane) McNamara. Shortly after her marriage to fellow Charlestown native Dennis M. Condon the couple moved to Waltham in 1953 where they became lifelong residents and raised their family.

While Dennis took up a career as a special agent for the F.B.I. and later became the state's public safety commissioner, Lillian went to work at the library of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and after that became a library aide for the Waltham public schools . . . a job she thoroughly enjoyed and was good at.

After her kids were grown she went back to school where she earned her Bachelor's degree in 1982 from Northeastern University in Boston.

She loved traveling . . . around the country and around the world . . . always fascinated by the experience of visiting other countries and cultures. She was a lifelong learner and a lover of the fine arts. At every opportunity, whether at home or abroad, she would visit museums and the opera and was a student of both. She was a longtime season ticket holder of the Boston Symphony.

Lillian most certainly would have agreed with 19th century English art critic John Ruskin who said that "Fine art is that in which the hand, the head and the heart . . . go together."

Her husband of sixty-one years, Dennis, died July 13, 2009.

She leaves her children, Dennis M. Condon Jr. (Ret. FBI S.A.) and his wife, Joyce, of Alexandria, VA, Janet Condon of Waltham, Mary E. Hardiman and her husband, James, of Waltham, James F. Condon (Ret. Lt. MSP) and his wife, Katie Walsh Condon (Ret. Trooper MSP), of Brownfield ME, Matthew G. Condon of Somerville, and Elaine M. Gill (Ret. Detective Lieut. MSP) and her husband, Kenneth Gill (Ret. Capt. MSP), of West Newbury; her grandchildren, Dennis Condon, Patrick Condon, Michael Condon, Katherine Shea, Sean Hoar, Grace Condon, Caroline Condon, Ryan Gill and Benjamin Gill; her great-grandchildren, Luca Condon, Leo Condon, Gavin Shea, Conor Shea and Atalie Gelfusa; her brother, William McNamara and his wife, Jean, of Braintree; her sisters-in-law, Geraldine Ridings McNamara and Therese McNamara and many nieces and nephews.

Lillian was the mother of the late Jeanne M. Condon and a sister of the late Ethel Callahan, Helen McNamara, Daniel McNamara and John McNamara.

Family and friends will honor and remember Lillian's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Monday, November 14th from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 10 a.m. on Tuesday morning before leaving in procession to Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 880 Trapelo Road, Waltham, where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Arlington.

The Condon family would like to express their deepest appreciation to the administration and staff at Meadow Green Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the outstanding care and kindness given to Lillian.
