Lillian Delenia Henderson, longtime resident of Waltham, died peacefully on April 19, 2015, after a long illness. She was 82.
Lillian was born in Birmingham, AL on November 24, 1932 to the late James M. and Amelia (Thomas) Baker. Raised in Birmingham, Lillian later graduated from American University in Washington D.C.
She married the late Herbert H. Henderson on June 11, 1955 in Nashville, TN. Herb and Lillian later moved to Washington D.C. where they started their family and eventually raised three sons, Herbert Jr., Howard and Brian. Lillian and family moved to Dorchester, MA in 1963, and then Waltham, MA in 1965.
Lillian and Herb thrived as a couple, sharing a deep romance that lasted for more than 55 years. They enjoyed creating festive barbecues with family and friends, local politics, vacations to Cape Cod and Hawaii and long walks together. She strongly promoted civil rights and the pursuit of higher education, lifelong passions that she passed to her loving children. Lillian was employed by several firms while living in Waltham, but was proudest of her service as an health policy administrator at Brandeis University.
Lillian was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert, brother James M. Baker, Jr., sisters Mary K. Baker, Clara T. Baker and favored niece Frances Baker Spears.
She is survived by brother Thomas Baker of Nashville, TN and his wife Corlos, brother-in-law Jeremiah Henderson of Washington, D.C., Aunt Kathleen Wood of Birmingham, AL, her three sons Herbert Jr and his wife, Rulene, of Spokane, WA, Howard Henderson of Waltham MA, and Brian (Eric) Henderson of Waltham, MA, and grandsons Jeremiah Henderson and his wife Tawna, and Ryan Henderson, all of Seattle, WA.
Lillian also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews in Alabama, Massachusetts, New York and Washington, D.C.
Family and friends will honor and remember Lillian's life by gathering at 9 am on Wednesday, May 6th, in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street, (Rte. 20),
Waltham, where her Funeral Service will be held at 10 am. Burial will be held at 1:30 pm in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
