Waltham – Mrs. Lucie M. (Schaffer) Faramelli, of Waltham, died in the company of her family in Belmont Manor Nursing Home on Wednesday, December 6, 2017. She was 88.
Lucie Marie Schaffer was born July 2, 1929 in Collingswood, Pennsylvania, a daughter of the late Joseph and Lucia (Schlopsna) Schaffer. Raised and educated in Pennsylvania she was a graduate of Upper Darby High School in Upper Darby and earned her nursing degree from Presbyterian School of Nursing, now Penn Presbyterian Medical Center.
She married Norman J. Faramelli on April 27, 1957 in Church of the Redeemer in Springfield, Pennsylvania. She worked as an operating room nurse at Presbyterian Medical Center for over 10 years before staying at home to raise her children.
As an activist for human rights Lucie was instrumental in establishing the first of three shelters for victims of domestic violence. She was a founding member and long active in Waltham's WATCH CDC. Lucie documented living conditions on the South Side and abusive landlords back when this was an invisible problem in the late 1980's. She was a champion for justice and had a lasting impact on the community. A member of Christ Church Episcopal, she was founder of its 'Grandma's Pantry' in 1990. It serves as a supplemental food pantry for the elderly of Waltham. Its congregation and faithful local community contributions fill the cupboards and support the mission financially.
Outside of giving back to the community she so loved, Lucie was a voracious reader, enjoyed the challenge and completion of a puzzle, the sounds of jazz music, the beauty of flowers and traveling.
In addition to her husband of 60 years, Rev. Norman J. Faramelli, she leaves their children, Christine F. Russe and her husband, Larry of Lewisville, Texas, Catherine A. Flickinger and her husband, John of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Paul J. Faramelli and his wife, Sherynne of Holliston and Deborah L. Moschella and her husband, Anthony Jr. of Chuluota, Florida; her sister, Shirley Thorn of Morton, Pennsylvania; her grandchildren, Fred Russe (Ashley), Michael Flickinger (Jennifer), Rebecca Smith (Kirby), Mark Flickinger, Thomas Higgins, James Higgins, Anthony Moschella III (Michelle), Matthew Flickinger, John Flickinger Jr., Elizabeth Moschella; her great-grandchildren, Eva, Kaitlyn, Noah, Lucie Flickinger, Wendy and Walker Smith and many nieces & nephews.
