Margaret “Mimi” Foster, née Margaret Josephine McCarthy passed away peacefully on December 7, 2022, her family close at hand. Mimi grew up in Riverdale, the Bronx, New York and attended Elizabeth Seton High School in Yonkers, New York. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Rosemont College, Rosemont, Pennsylvania in 1958. Mimi was the daughter of Dr. Thomas F. McCarthy, president emeritus, Medical Society of the State of New York, and Marion C. McCarthy, née Connors. She married John Kingsley Foster of Scarsdale, New York in 1960.
Mimi loved tennis, bridge, gardening and entertaining at her home in Harwichport. She and King were blessed with three sons: John Thomas Foster of Brooklyn, New York; James Douglass Foster of Milton, Massachusetts; and Jeffrey Lawrence Foster of Newton, Massachusetts. The family moved often in the early years, residing first in New York City, then Norwich, Connecticut, then Rivervdale, New Jersey, then Huntington Beach, California, followed by Lincoln, Massachusetts and finally Harwichport, Massachusetts, where King and Mimi lived happily for 50 years.
Before her marriage, Mimi worked for Manpower in New York City. Always fashionable, Mimi was featured in a national television ad campaign, and would later go on to be featured in print advertising as well. As her sons went off to school, Mimi took on outside responsibilities. She managed All-Cape Appliance of West Harwich, and for thirteen years was office receptionist at Infinium Software, then of Hyannis.
Mimi was a long-time volunteer at The Family Pantry of Cape Cod, and worked at their thrift shops in Harwichport and West Harwich. She also spent many hours working for Volunteers of Cape Cod. She was a member of Allen Harbor Yacht Club, the Garden Club of Harwich and several bridge groups.
A funeral Mass will be scheduled for a future date.
Mimi is survived by her three sons; her brother James McCarthy of the Bronx, New York; and her sister Carol M. Bryan of Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, along with Jim’s wife Kaci Foster, Jeff’s wife Lisa Snyder and Mimi’s grandchildren Pierce Foster, Abigail Foster, Malcolm Foster and Clare Foster.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to The Family Pantry of Cape Cod, 133 Queen Anne Rd, Harwich, MA 02645 or www.thefamilypantry.com
