Margaret R. (Reid) Towne, of Waltham, died Saturday, December 11, 2010 in her home. She was 85.
Margaret, known to family and friends as ‘Peggy’, was born on July 11, 1925 in Winthrop, the youngest child of the late Willis John Reid and the late Margaret-Jessie (MacDonald) Reid. A graduate of Winthrop High School she also graduated with an Associate’s Degree from Colby Junior College in New London, New Hampshire. She married Nathan Warren Towne on September 16, 1950 and moved to Waltham that same year.
Her professional career began as a secretary for the Massachusetts Aeronautical Commission at Boston’s Logan Airport. After staying at home to raise her family she later worked with her husband at the New England Gift Center in Bedford for 10 years.
Peggy was a longtime member of Trinity Church in Waltham and served as a Deacon. She was a member of the Piety Corner Club and ran its ballroom dancing school for many years. Her father was a talented boat builder and she developed a keen interest in wooden boats and collected depression glass and items with images of lighthouses. She was a lifelong and loyal Republican and enjoyed trips to Kennebunkport with her sister.
She is predeceased by her husband, Nathan W. Towne who died January 10, 1999 and her siblings, Bert Reid, Carrie Glancy, Robert Reid, Willis Reid Jr. and James Reid.
Peggy is survived by her children, Richard W. Towne and his wife, Denise, of Natick, Janet T. Needham and her husband, Christopher, of Lexington and Robert N. Towne and his wife, Gail, of San Antonio, Texas; her sister, Dorothy Shaw of Chestertown, MD; four grandchildren, Ian Aucoin, Allison Needham, Kathryn Needham and Nathan Towne.
Family and friends will gather to honor and remember Peggy’s life at a Memorial Service on Saturday, January 8th at Trinity Church, 730 Main Street, Waltham at 11AM.
Interment in Mount Feake Cemetery will be held privately.
