Marguerite M. “Peggy” (Governor) Trefonides of Westport, formerly of Waltham died Wednesday, October 23, 2024 at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Needham. She was 95.
Born in Boston on March 29, 1929, Peggy was the daughter of the late Charles and Margaret (Peterson) Governor. She grew up in the Savin Hill neighborhood of Dorchester and graduated from Dorchester High School.
Peggy married the late Byron Trefonides Sr. at The Old South Church in Boston. The couple built a loving home in Waltham for many years before relocating to Westport, Massachusetts, where they enjoyed their retirement together until Byron's passing in 2018.
Peggy was known for her kindness, passion for life, and indomitable spirit. She always worked to make a positive impact on those around her, whether it be family and friends or the less fortunate members of the community, notably by founding a food pantry soup kitchen in Boston to help those in need. Her welcoming heart, along with her open mind, made her a great conversationalist and she enjoyed learning about people over good chat and coffee.
In addition to her husband Byron, Peggy was predeceased by her brother Charles Governor.
She leaves her children, Byron Trefonides Jr. and his wife Eileen of Windham, New Hampshire and Donna T. MacClary and her husband Robert of Westwood; her grandchildren Jeslyn Monaghan and her husband Richard, Nicholas Trefonides, and Stephanie Rosenblum and her husband Brett; her great-granddaughters, Freya and Finnoula Monaghan, and Jace and Alaina Rosenblum. Also survived by many nieces & nephews.
Family and friends will honor and remember Peggy by gathering for a celebration of her life in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham, on Saturday, November 2nd from 3:00 – 6:00 pm. Burial is private.
