Waltham – Mrs. Marie A. (Leas) Hayes, of Waltham, died Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. She was 85.
Marie was born in Lawrence on November 14, 1924, a daughter of the late Charles and Marie (Hailson) Leas, and had been a Waltham resident for the past sixty-three years. Marie was a graduate of the Carney Hospital School of Nursing in Dorchester and began her nursing career at the Brighton Marine Hospital. Until her retirement in 1985 she worked for thirty years at Waltham Hospital. Marie was a member of the Saint Camillus Nurse’s Group and the Retired Nurse’s Association of Waltham Hospital.
Her husband of more than sixty years, retired Waltham Fire Department Lieutenant Malcolm R. ‘Mac’ Hayes died on December 22, 2009.
Marie leaves her children, Malcolm R. ‘Mac’ Hayes, Jr. and his wife, Donna, of Weston, Barry C. Hayes of Waltham, Marie A. Marquis and her husband, Greg, of Bow, New Hampshire, Judith M. Cary of Pittsfield, Christopher M. Hayes and his wife, Jana, of Burlington, Iowa, Patricia M. Luckern and her husband, Mo, of New Durham, New Hampshire, Eileen M. Bates and her husband, Ray, of Marblehead and Jonathan W. Hayes and his wife, Pam, of West Burlington, Iowa; her sister, Aida Panagiotakis of Chelmsford; her lifelong friend, Col. Mary C. Quinn, USA (Ret.) of Weymouth; 19 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was also the mother of the late Maryellen Hayes and a sister of the late George D. Leas.
Family and friends will honor and remember Marie’s life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Sunday, November 7th, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Monday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Mary’s Church, 133 School Street, Waltham where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Saint Bernard’s Cemetery, Concord.
