West Newton – Mrs. Marion E. (Flaherty) Ackerley, of West Newton, died at home on Monday, January 9, 2017 with her family by her side. She was 82.
Marion was born in Waltham on January 22, 1934, a daughter of the late Thomas and Mary (Sullivan) Flaherty. She was raised and educated in Waltham and graduated from Saint Charles High School. In 1958 she married Somerville native John Ackerley in Saint Bernard's Church and the couple settled in West Newton where they raised their family.
For many years she worked as an operator for the New England Telephone Company and after that worked for BayBank.
Marion will best be remembered by her family as being warm, loving, kind and generous with her time, talent and treasure. She and her husband John were the parents every child remembers attending every school and sporting event. She loved planning family gatherings where she organized games for the kids, young and old, and led the gang in song. Her musical talents extended to her membership in the Silver Newtones, a group she thoroughly enjoyed and made many friendships through.
The beloved wife of the late John Ackerley, Marion leaves her children, John, Jr. and his wife, Patricia, of Framingham and their children, Katherine, Patrick and his wife Jazmyne, Mary, Keelin and Mollie; Thomas and his wife, Jeanne, of Natick and their children, Lauren and Carly; Patricia of Newton; Kevin and his wife, Carmelina, of Newton and their children, Sloan and Devin; Maureen Yerardi and her husband, Stephen, of Framingham and their children, Alec, Vincent and Johnny; her great-granchildren, Adrian and Makenna Ackerley; her devoted nephew, Thomas Flaherty, 3rd and his wife, Robyn, of Arlington, Texas; her sisters, Nancy Seaman of Newton and Jean Flanigan of Hudson and many nieces and nephews.
She was also a sister of the late Thomas Flaherty, Jr.
Family and friends will honor and remember Marion's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Friday, January 13th from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning before leaving in procession to St. Bernard's Church, 1423 Washington Street, West Newton where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham.
