Woburn - Maj. Marjorie Matheson, USA (Ret.), of Woburn, died Sunday, May 29, 2016 at the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital, Bedford. She was 98.
Margie was born in Somerville on November 5, 1917, a daughter of the late Donald and Johanna (MacDonald) Matheson. She graduated from Somerville High School and later from Symmes Hospital School of Nursing in Arlington.
She then then joined the United States Army Nurse Corps where she was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in 1943 and was honorably discharged as a Major after more than twenty years of service. Assignments included Wales, England, France, the Philippines, Japan, Korea, Texas, Florida and lastly Missouri. After her retirement from the Army she returned to Massachusetts where she was closer to family and worked as a private duty nurse. Margie was a strong and independent woman and enjoyed summering at Nuttings Pond in Billerica.
She is survived by many dear nieces and nephews and their families.
She was the sister of the late Donald, Bruce, Frederick, Harold and Howard Matheson, Mary Kendall and Florence Matheson.
Family and friends will honor and remember Margie's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street, (Rte. 20), Waltham on Friday, June 3rd, from 5 to 8 p.m. and again on Saturday morning when her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge.
