Martin J. Keaveney

Shrewsbury - Mr. Martin J. Keaveney, formerly of Waltham, Wayland and Marlborough died Wednesday, August 30, 2017 in The Carlyle House in Framingham. He was 93.

Born on May 15, 1924 in Waltham he was a son of the late Martin J. and Catherine Josephine (Rogers) Keaveney. Raised and educated in Waltham he was a graduate of the former Saint Mary's High School and his bachelor's degree from Boston University. After returning from the service in World War II he earned his Master's degree in Taxation from Northeastern University.

Martin honorably served his country in the United States Army in the 102nd Division, 407th Regiment (3rd Battalion). Involved in a major battle during the war he was injured and suffered the loss of a leg. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

He married Gertrude 'Jean' O'Connell on August 28, 1948 in Saint Mary's Church. They lived many years in Waltham before moving to Wayland in 1961 and to Marlborough in 1989. They retired to the Southgate Community in Shrewsbury in 2010.

He enjoyed a long and successful career in accounting as a Certified Public Accountant. He served as President and C.E.O. of O'Brien, Fitzgerald, Taylor & Keaveney P.C. on Central Street in Waltham for many years before taking full retirement at age 90. He loved his work and his clients were friends.

His memberships included the AICPA, Massachusetts & Nationals Certified Public Accountants Associations; Disabled American Veterans (life member), Amputee Veterans Association, Joseph N. Hill Post 156 American Legion.

He and Jean enjoyed travelling extensively and taking cruises. As lovers of all things Irish it was certain that Ireland was their favorite destination to where they made many trips. They were active in various Irish and shamrock cultural clubs and societies.

In addition to his wife of 65 years, Jean, he is predeceased by his sisters, Bernadette Healey, Sr. Patricia Keaveney, SND and his brother, Raymond L. Keaveney.

He leaves their children, Michael T. Keaveney and his wife, Sharon Tilburg, of Greensborough, Georgia, Jean M. Tierney of Norfolk, Peter M. Keaveney and his wife, Lisa, Mark J. Keaveney and his wife, Linda, all of Maynard, Eileen M. Riethle and her husband, William of Marlborough and Kathleen A. Keaveney and her husband, John J. Bressette of East Sandwich; his grandchildren, Daniel Keaveney (Maria), Meaghan Venuti, Julia McCarthy (Christopher), Kathleen Tierney, Matthew Tierney, Shannon Keaveney (fiancé Drew Rausch), Patrick Keaveney, (Melissa), Ryan and Christine Keaveney; his great-grandchildren, Joseph and Lilli Venuti and Karli Keaveney; his siblings, Marie Robins of Center Harbor, New Hampshire, Dorothea Mercier of Storrs, Connecticut, Madeline Bradley of Pembroke Pines, Florida; also survived by many nieces & nephews.

Family and friends will honor and remember Martin's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Tuesday, September 5th from 4 to 7 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Wednesday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Mary's Church, 133 School Street, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial with military honors will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham.
