Waltham – Mrs. Mary E. ‘Peggy’ (Tierney) Connaughton, of Waltham, died Thursday, August 19, 2010 in Saint Patrick's Manor in Framingham. She was 86.
Peggy was born on September 12, 1923 in Loughrea, County Galway, Ireland, a daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Flaherty) Tierney. She worked as a hairdresser for many years at Mademoiselle’s Salon on Main Street in Waltham. A longtime member of Saint Mary’s Parish in Waltham, she sang as a member of the choir and had been active helping the parish Saint Vincent de Paul ministry.
The wife of the late Bernard Connaughton, she leaves her step-children, Richard J. Connaughton and his wife, Dragana, of Palm Beach, Florida, Mary C. Connaughton and Eilish A. Connaughton, both of Waltham, Bernard Connaughton of New York City, John G. Connaughton and his wife, Genny, of Lincoln, Mark J. Connaughton and his wife, Donna, of Burlington, Leonard F. Connaughton and his wife, Susan, of Winchester and Carmel M. Kitsakos and her husband, George, of Topsfield; her brother and sisters, Martin Tierney, Bridget Houk, Theresa Maher and her husband, Brendan, and Pauline Burke and her husband, Jackie, all of County Galway, Ireland; her sister-in-law, Theresa Tierney of Mansfield; 13 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Peggy was also a sister of the late Michael Tierney, Nora Niland, Janie Kenny, Joseph Tierney and Jimmy ‘Bodie’ Tierney.
Family and friends will honor and remember Peggy’s life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Tuesday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Mary’s Church, 133 School Street, Waltham where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Saint Mary’s Cemetery, Needham.
