Mrs. Mary E. (Florio) Giles, of Waltham, formerly of Concord, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, after a period of declining health, surrounded by her loved ones.
Mary was born in Concord, a daughter of the late Tito and Margaret (O'Connor) Florio. She was raised in Concord and graduated from Concord High School, class of 1951. She went on to attend Lasell College and Middlesex Community College. At the age of 23, she married Andrew F. "Frank" Giles at St. Bernard Church in Concord. The couple settled in Waltham in 1958. Frank passed away on May 12, 2013. They were married for 58 years.
Professionally, Mary worked in the legal department at Utica Mutual Insurance Company. She later served as a crossing guard for the City of Waltham for 18 years. Together with her husband, Mary co-owned and operated Giles Real Estate for over 30 years.
Mary had a deep love for her hometown of Concord, particularly the family street named Florio Drive. She also cherished her home of Waltham, where she was actively involved in civic life, including serving on the Waltham Conservation Commission. She enjoyed winters on Sanibel Island, Florida, and summers in Maine, always finding peace near the ocean.
In addition to her beloved husband, Frank, Mary was predeceased by their son, Shawn T. Giles.
Mary is survived by her children, Darlene M. Prendergast (William) of Brentwood, New Hampshire, and Andrew F. Giles Jr. (the late Patrice) of Lancaster; her grandchildren, Allison Jakubowicz (Scott), Stacy Giles, and Andrew Giles III (Laura); her sisters, Margaret "Peggy" Spinelli of Concord and Eileen Murphy of Stow; three great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Family and friends are invited to honor and celebrate Mary's life at a wake on Friday, December 13th, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 p.m. at The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Route 20), Waltham, followed by her service at 12:00 p.m. A private burial for family only will follow in St. Bernard Cemetery in Concord.
