West Newton – After a long life lived and loved well Mary Haratsis died peacefully at her home on Tuesday May 12, 2020 surrounded by her family. She was 98 years old.
Mary Stoico was born in Somerville on December 3, 1921, a daughter of Italian immigrants, the late Michael and Nancy (Lepore) Stoico. A graduate of Somerville High School she had worked multiple jobs throughout her life and retired as a supervisor in the mail room at Jordan Marsh in Newton.
On June 3, 1942 she married Charles Haratsis in Saint Anthony's Church and lived in Somerville where they raised their three daughters before moving to West Newton. Mary and Charles were married 72 years until his death on October 11, 2016.
Mary Haratsis was a loving wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and great grandmother. Mary lived through the great depression and as a result of her experiences was generous and always helped those in need. She wanted to be sure that her daughters were well educated and independent women.
Childhood memories of a good home include a large kitchen, a warm stove, a simmering pot….and a Mom. Mary Haratsis first and foremost was a wife and mother. Her love was made visible in her home…in particular her kitchen where recipes from her Italian heritage were made from scratch and shared with family and friends.
She was also very talented with needle and thread and sewed most of her own and children's clothes with love.
Mary had a number of ways she kept busy and active. She loved her rose garden and flowers blooming around her. From Neal Diamond to Pavorati music brightened her days and made her dance. Her love of shopping made her closets burst and her fingers sparkle!
Above all, she was a devout Catholic and found great comfort in her faith.
Mary is reunited in heaven with her beloved husband, Charles and her brother, Joseph Stoico and sister Lucy Davidio.
She leaves her children, Lucille N. Haratsis of Waltham, Stephanie M. Porter and her husband, Mal of Waltham and Adele Haratsis-Flynn and her husband, Dennis of Holliston; her grandchildren, John Porter and his wife, Laura, Kristin Porter, Charlene and Douglas Flynn and her three great-grandchildren, Hannah, Madison and Ainsley Porter; her sister Nancy Stoico, of Somerville; and the late Joseph Stoico and Lucy Davidio and many nieces, nephews, and their families.
Burial in Calvary Cemetery in Waltham is private. A Memorial Mass at Saint Bernard's Church in West Newton will be announced.
Memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army, Attn: Development, 25 Shawmut Road, Canton, MA 02021
