Watertown – Mary Joanne "Jo" Hanley, of Watertown, formerly of Waltham, died Tuesday, November 2, 2021 at her home at the Residence in Watertown Square. She was 77.
Jo was born in Lynn on October 10, 1944, a daughter of the late Bernard C. and Ellen (Gannon) Hanley. Following her family's move to California she graduated from Saint Monica's High School in Santa Monica and continued her studies at Mount Saint Mary's College in Los Angeles. She later earned her Bachelor's degree in computer science from Boston University.
She worked for many years as a programmer for the New England Telephone Company and later at Waltham Hospital where she authored the code for the patient admissions and billing departments. She loved her work, and was a proud member of Mensa.
Jo leaves her sister and brothers, Ellen Fraumeni of Arlington, Edward Hanley of Reno, Nevada, Stephen Hanley of Newton and Walter Hanley of Waltham and many nieces and nephews.
She was also the foster sister of the late Karen Michaels.
Family and friends will honor and remember Jo's life by gathering for calling hours on Thursday, November 11th from 4 to 8 p.m. in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte.20), Waltham and again on Friday morning at 9 a.m. before leaving in procession to Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 880 Trapelo Road, Waltham, where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Mount Benedict Cemetery, West Roxbury.
