Waltham – Mary Pauline Manning, of Waltham, died on Monday, March 27, 2017 at Maristhill Nursing Home. She was 100.
Pauline was born in Waltham on May 5, 1916, a daughter of the late George and Marie (Roach) Manning. After graduating from St. Mary's High School in Waltham she went to work in the advertising department at The Boston Globe, a job she would hold for over 25 years. It was through the Globe that she was able to earn a one year business degree from Harvard University.
She loved working at the newspaper where she considered her coworkers her friends. From an article written in 2016 Pauline said 'I had loads of girlfriends. They'd say, 'Tonight we're going to a club,' and I'd say, 'Well, why would I go home? I'm already dressed up.'" In her spare time she enjoyed travelling, going out to dinner and the theater. Never having children of her own she was especially close with her nieces and nephews, never missing a birthday or special occasion. She was also a devout Catholic and in later years would always make it a point to watch daily Mass on television.
She was the sister of the late George E., Henry F. and Donald J. Manning and Shirley A. Buckley and is survived by many loving nieces including her god-daughter, DawnMarie Manning of Waltham, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Family and friends will honor and remember Pauline's life by gathering for calling hours on Sunday, April 2nd, from 2 to 4 p.m. in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street, (Rte. 20), Waltham and again on Monday at 9 a.m. before leaving in procession to Saint Mary's Church, 133 School Street, Waltham where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.
