Watertown – Mrs. Mary T. (Regan) Menton, of Watertown, died Friday, December 16, 2011 at Saint Elizabeth's Hospital in Brighton. She was 85.
Mary was born in Dorchester on February 14, 1926, a daughter of the late Joseph P. and Kathleen E. (Sullivan) Regan, and was a graduate of Mount Saint Joseph Academy in Brighton. After that she went to nursing school at Boston City Hospital and worked as a cadet nurse during World War II. She was also trained in psychiatric nursing at the Menninger Clinic in Topeka, Kansas, established to meet the country's demand for psychiatric care to treat returning military veterans.
In September, 1950 she married Paul C. Menton, a Watertown native, and the couple settled in town to raise their five children. Mary worked as a registered nurse at Saint Elizabeth's Hospital in Brighton, Sancta Maria Hospital in Cambridge and for fifteen years at Boston College. After she retired from B.C. she worked for a time at Anthony's Florist in Watertown and in the office at Newtown Condominiums in Watertown.
For the past twenty years she could also be counted on to volunteer every Thursday at the Watertown Food Pantry at Saint John's United Methodist Church in Watertown.
She leaves her husband of 61 years, the Honorable Paul C. Menton; her children, P. Christopher Menton and his wife, Judy, of Bristol, Rhode Island, Robert F. Menton and his wife, Debra, of Watertown, Jayne M. Irvine and her husband, Tom, of Falmouth, Brian D. Menton and his wife, Patricia, of Watertown and Carol Ann Menton of Watertown; her grandchildren, Nathan and Dina Menton, Ryan Menton, Alex Gorman, Christopher Irvine, Jessica Volmer and Matthew, Patrick and Timothy Menton; her brother, Joseph J. Regan of Wenham and many nieces and nephews.
Mary was also a sister of the late Jeanne M. Regan and Eleanor Smith.
Family and friends will honor and remember Mary's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Tuesday, December 20th, from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 8 a.m. on Wednesday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Patrick's Church, 212 Main Street, Watertown where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Burial will follow in Ridgelawn Cemetery, Watertown.
