Mary L. Muise

February 12, 1926 — December 13, 2020

Waltham – Mrs. Mary L. (O'Connell) Muise, of Waltham, died on Sunday, December 13, 2020 at Maristhill Nursing Home following a period of declining health. She was 94 years old.

The day that she died was the third Sunday of Advent, the one where the pink candle is lit on the wreath. That particular candle is also called the 'Gaudete' candle, from the Latin word meaning "rejoice". And for anyone that knew Mary the timing couldn't be more poignant . . . she was a particularly joyful woman despite the challenges that life threw at her. She lived her life knowing that there wouldn't be a song in her heart every day . . . but she sang anyway.

When she closed her eyes for the last time she also opened them in Heaven to Harvey, her beloved husband of twenty-two years who she'd missed every day since his death in October, 1980. Widowed at fifty-four she never uttered a word of worry or complaint to her daughters with the kind of faith that was inspiring. Mary was joyful in hope, patient in affliction and faithful in prayer.

She was born in Natick on February 12, 1926, the daughter of the late Daniel and Julia (Whalen) O'Connell. She was raised in Wellesley and graduated from Wellesley High School.

She met Harvey, a Waltham native and WW II and Korean War Army vet, whose real name was Peter, when both were working during the 1950's at the Middlesex and Boston Street Railway Company in Waltham, known locally as the 'Car Barn'. Following their 1958 marriage the pair made Waltham their lifelong home.

She found joy spending time near the ocean or in her garden admiring the birds above that sang beautiful tunes. Ice skating was a fun pastime in the winter months. Mary also loved her neighbors. Their frequent card games were a joy to be shared and the friendships that she had with them were treasure beyond price.

Her greatest joy of all was her family. She was a proud and loving mother and grandmother.

The wife of the late Peter Harvey Muise, she leaves her children, Loretta A. Leconte of Waltham and Diane M. Cerminara (Giuseppe "Joe") of Bellingham; her son-in-law, Mario Leconte; her grandchildren, Marcel and Julia Leconte, and Angelo and Christina Cerminara and many dear friends, neighbors, and companions.

Out of love and concern for family and friends, a private graveside service will be held in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham. A Memorial Mass in Saint Mary's Church will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, Mary's family asks that you keep her words of wisdom close to your heart . . . Plant Smiles . . . Grow Laughter . . . Harvest Love.
