Waltham – Mrs. Mary I. (Whelan) Sawtell, of Waltham, died Wednesday, March 18, 2015 in Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston. She was 86.
Mary was born in Boston on July 29, 1928, a daughter of the late Emmett and Laura (Cousins) Whelan. She was raised in Charlestown and had lived in Waltham for many years. She was a private secretary for the Harrington Corporation CPA's of Boston and before that worked for the state Division of Unemployment in Waltham.
She had been a longtime volunteer for the Meals on Wheels program in Waltham and at Sancta Maria Hospital in Cambridge. She was an active member at the Stanley Senior Center on Main Street.
Mary was the wife of the late William J. Killilea and Frederick Sawtell; mother of the late William J. Killilea, and a sister of the late Emmett Whelan and his late wife, Teresa.
She leaves her daughter, Maureen M. McCarthy and her husband, Edward, of Waltham; two grandsons, Brian McCarthy and his wife, Christine, and Keith McCarthy, and his wife Elma; two great-grandchildren, Keira and Noah McCarthy; her brothers, John Whelan and his wife, Ellen, of Charlestown and Daniel Whelan and his wife, Elizabeth, of Stoneham and many loving nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are private.
