Mrs. Matea Socorro Caldera, of Waltham, died on Friday, September 4, 2020 in Belmont Manor Nursing Home. She was 75 years old.
Matea was born in Jinotepe, Nicaragua on February 6, 1945, the daughter of the late Benjamin and Bertha Martinez. Growing up she was a talented student and was always at the top of her class. She had a strong work ethic and was a master tailor before immigrating to the United States in 1990 where she worked hard at learning English and obtaining her U.S. citizenship, while holding down a full time job. Always persevering, she was proud to have officially obtained her high school degree in the U.S. because her transcripts from Nicaragua were destroyed in the war. Until her retirement she had worked as the lead of housekeeping for retreats at the Campion Renewal Center in Weston. She was an avid hiker who loved nothing better than to raise her arms in conquering triumph at the summit of any elevation, big or small. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many.
She was the beloved wife of the late Gil E. Caldera who died in 1997, and is survived by her son, Miguel G. Caldera and his wife Katherine, of Lexington; her granddaughter, Meghan E. Caldera of Lexington, her brother Alvaro Martinez of Nicaragua and leaves many other family members including Melba Harmon of Kensington, MD, Ruth Carlson and her late husband, Lars, of Hollywood, CA and Richard Caldera of Moreno Valle, CA.
She was also the sister of the late Alejandro Martinez.
Funeral services and burial at Mt. Feake Cemetery in Waltham will be held privately.
