Medora E. Getchell

November 23, 1911 — February 19, 2012

Waltham – Mrs. Medora E. (Stevens) Getchell, of Waltham, died following a brief illness, on Sunday, February 19, 2012 at Meadow Green Nursing Home in Waltham. She was 100.

Medora was born in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, Canada on November 23rd, 1911, a daughter of the late Walter and Annie (Moore) Stevens. Upon marriage, she lived most of her life in Waltham. For more than sixty years she was a loyal and involved member of Immanuel United Methodist Church on Moody Street in Waltham.

She was an avid gardener and kept an immaculate home; always tending to the needs of her husband and her son. She delighted in the fact that she obtained her driver's license at the age of sixty-five; an age when most people start slowing down. Medora took another view and driving gave her a new lease on life; she was pleased to be able to help others by offering an occasional lift to Doctors appointments and the grocery store. Until recently, she lived at the Leland Home on Newton Street, having moved there from her longtime residence on Summit Street.

Her husband, Ivan P. Getchell, a local carpenter and also a St. Stephen native, died September 5, 1981.

She leaves her son, Byron M. Getchell and his wife, Cynthia, of Newburyport and her grandchildren, Andrew V.O. Getchell and his wife, Christine, of Old Orchard Beach, Maine and Stefanie G. Lamb and her husband, Steven, of Concord, New Hampshire.

She was also a sister of the late Herbert Stevens and W. Torrance Stevens of New Brunswick, Canada.

Funeral services will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Compassionate Care Hospice, 800 W. Cummings Park, Suite 3400, Woburn, MA 01801.
