Mr. Michael J. Chagnon Sr. died on May 22, 2022 of natural causes. He was 94.
Known lovingly by family and friends as 'Jim' because of his sunny disposition, Michael Joseph Chagnon was born January 2, 1928 one of seven sons to the late Arthur H. and Margaret Mary (Norton) Chagnon. Raised in Waltham he graduated from Waltham High School and later from Burdett Business College. He served in the Navy during World War II and was present as a seaman during the atomic bomb testing in the Pacific Ocean aboard the USS Askari. He married Juanita E. Harvey on July 22, 1950 in St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. Longtime residents of Waltham they lived many years in Natick and retired to Fort Pierce, Florida. Juanita died April 13, 2009.
Jim (Mike) was an accountant in the Boston area for many years. He loved piloting his plane, playing bridge and cribbage. He was adored by his family, and they grieve his passing. The family will sorely miss their patriarch, historian, and storyteller. In addition to his wife, Juanita, he was predeceased by his granddaughter, Tara; son-in-law, Jim Orent; brothers, Arthur (late Shirley), John (late Clare), Thomas (late Shirley), Paul (late Betsy) and William Chagnon.
Jim (Mike) is survived by his wife, Catherine (DeSantis) Chagnon; his children, Michael Chagnon Jr. (Carolyn) of Northport, Florida, James Chagnon (Karen) of Gardner, Andrew Chagnon (Kim) of Natick, Patricia Wurts of Wareham, Michele Charles (Al) of Braintree and Marianne Orent of Nashua, New Hampshire; his brother Raymond Chagnon (Barbara) of Falmouth and sister-in-law Diane Chagnon; also survived by 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Family and friends will honor and remember Jim's life by gathering for calling hours on Tuesday, June 28th from 4 to 7 p.m. in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Route 20), Waltham and again on Wednesday morning where his funeral service will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Burial with military honors will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham.
