Funeral services will be held in Bigelow Chapel at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, November 26th for Dr. Michael F. Koskinen. He died on Wednesday, November 20, 2024 following a period of declining health. He was 86.
He was the husband of the late Ines (Rivera) Koskinen.
A native of West Bloomfield Township, Michigan, Dr. Koskinen earned his bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge.
Early in his career he joined the family business, Koskinen Manufacturing in Hamtramck, Michigan. When he was twenty-eight, he was recruited by the United States Air Force to work as a physicist at Hanscom Air Base in Bedford. After his active-duty time he remained in the reserves until his discharge as a captain in 1978.
In 1964 he married the love of his life, Ines Rivera, a native of Fajardo, Puerto Rico, at Saint Paul’s Church in Cambridge. The couple made Newton their home until Dr. Koskinen moved to Maine following his wife’s death in 2019.
Inquisitive and brilliant by nature Dr. Koskinen embarked on a career in medicine after his time in the service and began his medical training at the University of California at Berkley before transferring to the Boston University Medical School where he received his degree.
Trained as a radiologist, he spent most of his medical career as the director of The Center for Magnetic Resonance at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston and was a pioneer in developing best practices in the burgeoning field.
In addition to his wife, Ines, he was predeceased by his parents, Onni and Alice (Kenney) Koskinen and his sisters, Nora Mask and Martha Miller.
He leaves his son, Steven M Koskinen and his wife, Collette Desjardins, and his grandchildren, Christopher and Claire Koskinen.
