Miss Mildred A. Olsen, of Waltham, died Tuesday, June 5, 2012 in Newton – Wellesley Hospital. She was 91.
Mildred was born on December 5, 1920 in Everett a daughter of the late Albert C. and Hazel P. (Crosby) Olsen. A graduate of Newton High School she was a longtime Waltham resident. She was a member of the W.A.V.E.S (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) in the United States Navy during World War II and was honorably discharged on February 4, 1946. She then worked for the State Department in the United States Embassy's in both Ecuador and Germany. Upon returning to the States she worked as a secretary for Raytheon Corporation for over 25 years, retiring in 1986.
Mildred is described as an independent and strong willed person. She attended the Boston Conservatory and was talented at the piano which she would play daily. She was a phenomenal cook and enjoyed sharing many of her talents from recipes of her own or something she found in one of her many cookbooks. Other interests included tennis and a love for the annual French Open, knitting, embroidery, sewing and reading a good book. Her favorite spot was at her cottage in Sanbornton, New Hampshire.
She is predeceased by her siblings, Bernice S. Howard, Albert C. Olsen, Rodney W. Olsen and Bernard R. Olsen.
She leaves her sisters-in-law, Helen E. Olsen of Concord ans Ruth Sahlin Olsen in Minnesota; many nieces & nephews; grandnieces & grandnephews.
Family and friends will honor and remember Mildred's life by gathering to visit at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning, June 9th, in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rt. 20), Waltham where her funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.
