Myrtle R. (Caruso ) Garro was born November 13, 1926 in Newton. She was one of six children born to the parents of the late Cassandra (Myers) and Antonio Caruso. Myrtle was preceded in death by Samuel, William (Willie), William (Gussie) Gwendolyn (Lynne Baldi), and Marjorie (Tyson) as well as grandson James W. Garro III.
Myrtle married the late James W. Garro Sr. April 27, 1946. They lived in Cambridge and enjoyed 53 years of marriage. They were the parents of James, Benjamin (deceased), Sandra and Geraldine (Gerry).
Myrtle was a Tupperware manager for many years and she sold Avon for over 70 years becoming an honorary President's Club member. Myrtle was presented with a Certification of Appreciation from the Cambridge Police Department for tireless enthusiasm, dedication and hard work. Myrtle received an award from the Cambridge Senior Volunteer Clearinghouse for outstanding volunteer service with The Salvation Army. The Salvation Army Cambridge Corps presented Myrtle with an award for outstanding fundraising efforts. At 80 years of age, the key to the City of Cambridge was presented to Myrtle. Myrtle was a member of the Silver Threads and a frequent guest on CCTV. She also served on the Cambridge Election Commission welcoming voters each time there was an election. She was a member on the Mayor's Committee. Interviewed by Sarah Boyer from the Cambridge Historical Commission, you will find one of Myrtle's numerous stories in "We Are The Port". She recently participated in the Jukebox Project where her voice will be heard by many at the press of a jukebox button.
Myrtle loved the Lord and worshipped at the Salvation Army where she was a blessing to many. She was commissioned as Prayer Sergeant July 18, 2000. She led bible study on Tuesday's. On Friday's you would find her setting up for her program 'Smile with Myrtle'. Many yard sales took place in front of the Salvation Army to help support the programs.
Myrtle's memory will forever be cherished by her children James W. Garro Jr. (Andrea), Sandra Lowe (Darcy), Geraldine Dottin (Warren); grandchildren, Sonja Garro, Toni Garro, Ranelle Cruz (Eddie), Seth Garro (Marisa), Vashti Garro, Darcelle Breneus (Carlson), Darcy Lowe Jr. (Thuy), Anthony Lowe (Christine), Sean Lowe (Stefani), Robert Lowe Sr. (Nicole), Jarrett Dottin, Jasmine Dottin; great-grandchildren, Richard Nicks III, Raheem Nicks, Rashawn Nicks, Jared Nicks, Charnecce McConnell, Lakeia McConnell, Zaria Boyd, Shaina Garro, Malik Garro-Emmanuel, Amaija Cruz, Jahaira Garro, Kayla Revallion (Jae), Imani Breneus, Myles Breneus, Zachary Breneus, Robert Lowe Jr., Tianna Lowe, Jalen Lowe, Kaleb Lowe, Eli Lowe, and Great, Great Grandchildren, Andre Nicks, Deon Nicks, Izayah Nicks, Bryson Nicks, Adonis Bolden, Maleek Simbert, Maalia Simbert, Mia Simbert, Ari Cotto, Aria Johnson, Aubrianna Celestino, Carlos (CJ) Celestino, Logan Lowe; many adopted daughters, adopted grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Family and friends will honor and remember Myrtle's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street, (Rte. 20), Waltham, on Thursday, July 28th from 4 to 7 p.m. Her funeral service will be held in the Salvation Army Church, 402 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge on Friday morning at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Cambridge Cemetery.
