Nicholas Francis Troisi

Nicholas Francis Troisi, Sr., of Weston, MA formerly of West Lebanon, NH and Plattsburgh, New York died Thursday, April 26, 2018 in Weston. He was 93.

Born on February 27, 1925 in Retsof, New York he was the son of Italian immigrants Nicola and Caterina (Zingaro) Troisi. He graduated from York High School and earned his Bachelor's degree from State University of New York (SUNY) at Cortland, his Master's degree in Education from Springfield College and his Doctorate in Education from Penn State University.

Nick honorably served his country during World War II in the Seabees (United States Navy) in the South Pacific where also played trumpet in the battalion band. He continued to serve in the Navy Reserves for 16 years rising to the rank of Captain. He married Miriam Evelyn Good of Waynesboro, PA on June 16, 1951.

Nick's extensive career in education began as Assistant Professor at Bucknell University. He joined the education faculty at SUNY Plattsburgh in 1955 and became Dean of Professional Studies in 1974, retiring in 1990. He was active in taking education to the community serving as director of leadership workshops and was a member of numerous external evaluation and accreditation committees in the U.S. and the United Kingdom. He also led efforts to establish educational ties between SUNY Plattsburgh and Binghamton and their neighboring Air Force Bases. At prisons throughout New York State, he served in several capacities including as educator and as prisoner grievance mediator.

Nick was very active in the Plattsburgh community. Instrumental in establishing the Plattsburgh Rotary Club, and he served as President and as District Governor for the Northern New York and Canada District. Through Rotary, he and Miriam travelled extensively. For seven years, while in their 70s, they taught English language internationally in Thailand and South Africa. Nick served as the President of the Plattsburgh area Chamber of Commerce (and was named "Irishman of the Year" in 1976), Honorary Commander at the Plattsburgh Air Force Base, and Chairman of Clinton County Tourist Bureau. He was inducted into SUNY- Cortland's Hall of Fame, and received many other honors and awards throughout his life. His faith remained a vital part of his life and Nick was an active member of Saint Peter's Church, Plattsburgh, where he served as trustee. Most important to Nick was his love for his family and he cherished time spent with them.


He and his late wife, Miriam moved from Plattsburgh to West Lebanon, NH in 2005 and continued to enjoy travelling in their retirement. Miriam died November 11, 2014 and shortly thereafter, Nick moved to Weston, Massachusetts to be closer to family. His entire life, Nick thoroughly enjoyed telling jokes and watching sports. A life-long Yankees fan, he adopted the Patriots and spent many weekends watching the games, drinking red wine and eating olives with his son, Nicholas Jr. Everyone who met him felt personally embraced by his sunny nature.

In addition to his wife, Miriam he is predeceased by his older siblings, Joseph, Tullio, Anthony, Arthur and Linda Troisi and Constantino DeVico.

He leaves his children, Catherine L. Troisi and husband, Richard Stoll of Houston, Texas, Nicholas F. Troisi Jr. and wife, Martha (Duff) of Winchester, Massachusetts, James H. Troisi and wife, Brenda (Hankins) of Lake Oswego, Oregon, and Rebecca J. Troisi and her husband, David Pattison of Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts; his grandchildren, Gregory Stoll and husband David Jedlicka, Jessica Stoll and husband Lukas Pfaff, Carolyn Stoll and husband Christopher Salgado, Melissa and Emma Troisi, Hannah and Seth Troisi, Ethan and Chloe Rogers; his great-grandchildren, Alice and Charlie Pfaff, Natalie Salgado, and Vanessa Jedlicka; also survived by numerous nieces & nephews.

Family and friends will honor and remember Nick's life by gathering at The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Saturday, May 5th for his Memorial Service at 11 a.m. Burial with military honors will be on Friday, May 4th in Saint Peter's Cemetery, 4811 South Catherine St., Plattsburgh, New York at 11 a.m. There are no calling hours.

Memorials in his name may be made to Plattsburgh State College Foundation Miriam and Nicholas Troisi Endowment, or to Rotary International.
